Face Velocity vs. Sash Position
Face Velocity Method In Comparison With The Sash Area Exhaust Flow Feedback Method
The above graphs depict the actual control of a conventional single sash fume hood using the NB-GPC
FHC
(Fume Hood
Controller). The same controller and fume hood are used in this demonstration with one graph depicting control using
the face area/Venturi valve approach and the other with the face velocity control approach. Each test was performed in
the American Auto-Matrix test facility in accordance with ANSI/ASHRAE 110-1995.
In this representation the sash position is displayed as it is moved from 25% to 100% open. The corresponding measured
face velocity is displayed for both control methodologies. The sash area method uses measured sash position to drive
a calibrated Venturi valve. The face velocity method uses measured face velocity to drive a damper using a closed loop
PID control algorithm.
These methodologies represent two different approaches to control. Although each methodology results in slightly
different outcomes, they both achieve safe and effective control of the fume hood; giving you the choice to implement
the methodology you want for control of your facility.
